Listening Practice #5 (due Tuesday)
Listen to this talk on education and creativity. Then, for your comment, tell us what the main idea is and share your opinions about what he says.
Listening Practice #4: A lecture about stress (due Monday, Feb. 4)
This is a lecture on how to deal with stress. This was from the level 5 listening book (Listen to Learn) from last semester, so some of you may have heard this lecture already. I think the content is very interesting, and the speaker offers some very good advice. I wish I had time to do this with you in class, but I don't, so I will offer this as listening homework.
Take notes. It's excellent practice for note-taking.
Then, respond to the following question right here on the blog: Which piece or pieces of advice did you find most useful or relevant for your life? Explain.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIJZbA8VrWU
p.s. Don't be afraid when you see 39 minutes as the video time. I made a mistake. The lecture is less than 10 minutes.

Some vocabulary you will hear: 1. adamant 2. advocate 3. banned 4. rescind 5. solid research

An alternative approach to education
Let's rethink the classroom, the teacher, and the student. If you listen carefully, you'll hear that he quotes Eric Mazur, our physics professor.
Do you like the way the blog looks or should I change it?
I want your time on the blog to be a pleasant experience. I do not want the blog to cause you stress.
Your opinions are welcome. I'm not sure that we will reach a consensus of opinion, but hopefully most of you can be happy...

Blog Writing #2: How You Learn Best (due Monday)
Do you feel that you learn more when the teacher is lecturing to the class or when the teacher assigns small-group problem-solving tasks? Explain.
Homework/Have a great weekend
The first thing I want to tell you is that I'm very excited about both classes. I can see that we're going to have a lot of good discussions and also a lot of fun. In just a few days, we have spoken about stress and relaxation, childbirth and overcoming pain, and corporal punishment and gender segregation in the classroom. Personally, I'm ecstatic that I found a topic that animated all of the Chinese students to actually dominate the class discussion! This might be a first in my teaching career! So let's keep thinking, keep reading, keep listening, keep talking, keep arguing... it's GREAT!
For homework:
1. Complete blog writing #1, if you haven't already done so.
2. Complete blog writing #2.
3. Complete listening practice #1 and #2 on the blog.

In class today, I mentioned some activities for you to check out. Please share your ideas or experiences with the class, if you have any.
Also, since the weather is going to be perfect this weekend, what a great time to go to the park (any park is good, but Hermann Park is especially nice to walk around) or the beach (45 minutes away), or go for a bike ride around the city, or play some tennis, or soccer, or football...

Blog Writing #1: Introduce Yourself (due Thursday, 1/24) )
Today each of you briefly introduced yourselves to the class. Now I
would like you to tell us some more about yourself in writing.
Here are some questions to consider:
Where are you in life (meaning, what stage)? Did you finish high school? College? Graduate school? Talk about your background, and your professional and personal aspirations. Also, discuss your interests, hobbies, and talents. Tell us something about yourself that makes you unique. Feel free to add anything else that you would like to share about yourself with the class.
You should post your writing as a comment to this post. Just click on comment.
This is writing PRACTICE. It does not have to be perfect.

Welcome to the blog!
Hello 5A and 5B,
The purpose of this blog is threefold. First, it will occasionally be a place for you to do some of your homework assignments. I will also place weekly schedules and vocabulary lists on it so if you're absent on Monday or you misplace (lose) your list, you can replace it easily.
The second purpose for this blog is for us to share useful information (where to go, where to shop, what to do if you have a problem, etc.). You can also use the blog to post items of interest, such as articles, pictures, invitations, etc.
Finally, I will use the blog to post internet links for different activities such as on-line reading and vocabulary practice/quizzes and listening activities.
You should check this blog every few days in order to keep current with the class.
I look forward to a great semester with all of you, and I look forward to "seeing" you on-line,
HC
