I think I learn more when the teacher is lecturing to the class that when the teacher assigns small-group problem-solving tasks because I can hear everyone's opinion, and not just the small group, besides, I think the class is going to be more dynamic if we can hear everyone's opinion.
I prefer to listen to the lecture given by a teacher. For listening to a native speaker speaking in front of is kind of a treasure to our non-English speakers. Apparently, we can not experience that in our own country or we will not be here in the LCC. At the same time, it can really improve our listening skills. I don't think I can gain anything through a small-group problem-solving tasks.
I guess both kinds of learning are helpful for students. First, when the teacher is lecturing students will get the main idea and the goal of the lecture will reach faster. Second, when the teacher assigns small-group problem solving tasks students will may be have a discussion ,so there's going to be different viewpoints and different ideas which means students will might learn something they never thought about that. In the end, I prefer to listen to the teacher lecturing to understand more.
In my opinion, I prefer both of them.I like discuss with my classmates, but I think I will choose teacher'lecturing.Because everyone's different opinion and ideas, sometimes we will argue with our classmates or friends.Teachers always know more than us because they are older than us.when you were confused some problem, your teachers will tell you how to solve it.This is the reason why I like teacher's lecturing.
Well, simply, my point of view, lecturing is very important and essential for students mentoring but not all the time. Although lecturing is more organized and direct in the subject without wasting time and effort, but small-group can give them the chance to practice what they have learned, specially, shay students. Moreover, students can exchange the information with their peers.
In my opinion, it's better to be assigned small-group problem-solving tasks because students have more opportunities to express their ideas and discuss with their classmates. That's a good way to improve speaking skill as well as presentation skill in front of a group. Additionally, I think it will be great if after every group discussion, teacher gives class his/her experiences and sharings to ensure that all students get the main ideas and exact purpose of the lecture.
when we get a group to talk to each other ,it not only can help us improve oral skills, but also can know about each other very well. we are foreign students, usually we only make friends who come from the same country. we seldom know other people.so making a group in class is a good chance to make friends who are from other countries.
I totally agree with Vicky. Every method of teaching has its particular advantages. When the teacher is lecturing to the class, I can easily get the main idea of the lecture as well as learn more about the pronunciation, the way of speaking of native people. Besides, we can not deny the fact that working in groups to discuss an issue is very useful to students. We can improve our speaking skill, make friends and find out about their culture...
I think both methods have advantages. When the teacher is lecturing we can understand what the text is talking about easily and ask question directly so that everyone in the class can get good explanation. When we have small groups problem solving we get to know everyone's opinion a little bit deeper because we are close to each other and we can usually ask for personal experiences.
i'm agree with you all. i think we learn in several ways. Personally i acquired my knowledge at school with teachers assignments and others activities , but i mostly develop my knowledge by exchanging with other.
I perform teacher is lecturing, but we still need small-groups work. Because sometime we don't have any idea about we can talk. In personally, I may not get the point, sometime I don't really understand the topic clearly. So I need the teacher start first then I am able to talk more with less mistakes.
I think the small-group work is really helpfull because we can talk and practice more while we are learning from the teacher too . So both ways is good for us to learn .
This topic is controversial. For me, I would like teacher is lecturing the class. First, the teacher could conduct our classes to right direction. Sometimes, when we discuss a topic in the group, we always do not have any idea about the topic or talk about the topic that not relate to the teacher give us. Secondly, some students have accent, it is hard to understand what they are talking about. If the teacher lecture the class, we learn not only the correct pronunciation, but also the way of speaking of native people.
I prefer lecturing by the teacher in the class to assign small group because I think all of the students speak in different languages and thats is the problem. We sometimes speak in the wrong English because we used English as a second language. However both method are important. I enjoy listening by the teacher. I love to hear American accent and tried to speak as good as I can. And assigns small group make us know more about how other friends think in the topic.? Everybody has a different opinions and I love to hear them discuss. Maybe because I'm Political Science student so I love to debate. Anyway both method help me improve my Enlish skill a lot.
Both of them are great. In my opinion, it is good for me to listen what teacher lectures to the class and what group-mates says when we discuss, because I can learn many things, like the topic we discussed in class on Friday, I knew what the high schools like in other countries. I also can improve my skills, especially for my listening skill.
I think both ways are good, but I learn more when the teacher is lecturing because I listen a person who speaks good english and caught the main idea easyly and if I want I can participate and practice my speaking skill, also in this form we can exchange our differents points of view. Although is true that work in small groups is great to meet others but we have another activities along to the semester to do this.
I think both of them have their advantages. In my opinion, I prefer to talk with my classmates in small-group because my English speaking is not well, and I want to improve it by small-group activities. But it doesn't mean I don't like teacher's lecturing. It's also a good way for me to improve my English standard. It not only practices my listening, but also allows me to learn more culture of the America.
In my opinion , it depends on the subject. For example, if I'm taking a Math class , I prefer the lecturer to lead . But if its a Sociology class , I'd have a small-group to work on it.
In my own experience , i think that both ways of learning are advantageous.first of all,our teacher plays a mentoring role during our classes , that is , we can quickly assimilate the main purposes and goals of the lecture and we can ameliorate our listening skills because we are language training students. Moreover , it develops the capacities that the students have to understand and memorize rapidly informations ..Nevertheless small groups of exchanges are very important because the class becomes very dynamic..Students,who are mostly from different countries, exchange their personal experiences and learn to know each other . They can also improve their speaking skills which is one of the greatest handicap of most of them. Furthermore , the teacher's work becomes easier because after those discussions , he could find out his\her student's problems and give the best answers to them so that they could assimilate their lessons.
lecture is a passive way of learning because I have to just sit and take in information .whereas Problem-solving task is an active way of learning , it's keep me thinking and analyzing . Therefor I think if we need to learn a new skills we have to be active .

I would prefer to be in small-group problem-solving tasks, with the lecture the information are easy to go while group problem solving tasks is considered like a small experince that provides the students with more persiving of the subject and make the information lasting for long time. In addition, working in group helps in showing the virious misundrstand that could be happend to students and then everyone could learn from these with discussing that would lead to a confirmed the udrestanding to the tasks and the subjects.
I'm totally agree with Vicky , also I think every style have their cons and pros but for me is more easy and comfortable work with partners because you can learn more faster of the other people experiences and have other points of views of the problem.

This is precisely Mazur's point. Thanks for the quote. It's spot on.
