This is a lecture on how to deal with stress. This was from the level 5 listening book (Listen to Learn) from last semester, so some of you may have heard this lecture already. I think the content is very interesting, and the speaker offers some very good advice. I wish I had time to do this with you in class, but I don't, so I will offer this as listening homework.
Take notes. It's excellent practice for note-taking.
Then, respond to the following question right here on the blog:
Which piece or pieces of advice did you find most useful or relevant for your life? Explain.

p.s. Don't be afraid when you see 39 minutes as the video time. I made a mistake. The lecture is less than 10 minutes.
We know that we cannot avoid daily hassles and stresses in life. We also heard a lot about stress, how to relieve stress, how to balance our life… But the only thing makes me pay attention to this lecture is the fourth advice “When our plan is not appropriate or it is impossible, we should learn how to accept that it is unchangeable and out of your hand.”
ReplyDeleteThere were many times I believed that my plans or what I thought would happen almost surely but they didn’t. Because of such things, I felt sad, stressful and even regretted a lot. At that time, I told myself that I had to be tough, had to accept that it was unchangeable, had to keep trying and everything’s gonna be alright…
In our daily life , we are always confronted with stressful situation which can be minor or major . Depending on the people concerned, stress manifests itself in different ways.Everyone finds his/her appropriate way of coping with stress but the most useful or relevant pieces of advice that i found was to pay attention to the body demands, meaning that, our body needs exercise to relax.sometimes, it is like i am really angry when i am stressed about my exams as i am a student or about my parent's expectations as their first daughter. As a result i lose easily my temper and i have a great fatigue.so,i need to be in a fitness club to punch a punching or to use other fitness machine in order to manage stress..Another interesting advice is to learn to accept that things are unchangeable and out of my hands..In my everyday life , i used to be an organised and a preventative girl.so,when my plans do not occur or something unexpected happens , i start stressing and i have headache.
ReplyDeleteI think the useful advise I found it more resonable is the third one " to PLAN and ACT ". I belive that if I'm stressed and that started to manifiste on me, I will try to plan for something in order to keep my self busy . That may be as a pause for my brain. Moreover, It might encourge me to rethink about the stress causer positively and brightly in which would relife that stress easely.
ReplyDeleteI found it true that everyone has stress in her/his life and it might be positive or negative. In addition, it's important to know the way that you can use or do to relieve the stress. Also, I found it useful in this video when she started to explain how to deal with stress. Therefore, I do like some advices to decrease stress. For example; pay attention to your body's demands, have a good exercise program , keep your body busy, and the most important one is learn to accept situations witch out of control.
ReplyDeleteWe all know that stress it's something that we have to deal with everyday, and to overcome it we have to pay attention to our body demands, exercise and good nutrition are good way to deal with stress. Another thing we can do to deal with stress is to learn to accept situations which are out of our control that we can not act on, that's something very important because, most of us have experienced situations where we wish we could change the result and we can't, that's can cause us a big stress but we have to learn to deal with that and look how to overcome it.
ReplyDeleteThis video is useful because it gives us the right definition of stress and tells us about different ways to cope or to deal with stress. It is really important to recognize the type of stress that we have and we have signs like insomnia, smocking, loss of weight to tell us when it starts. Then we need to find ways to find solutions for these issues. I think the good piece of advice that this video gives to us is that we need to pay attention to what our bodies need and have a good exercise program. In addition, we have to learn to accept situations that we are not able to control and do things at a speed that we can handle because sometimes we just need to take it easy instead of start worrying about things.
ReplyDeleteFor me , I found that all the four points are appropriate manner to cope with stress ,therefor, none of them are less important than the others . Which I can summarize it in:
ReplyDelete1 –learn your stress signal before it gets out of control and reward yourself with withdraw yourself from any stressful situation.
2 – pay attention to your body demand , such as , good nutrition and exercise.
3 – make a plan for yourself and act when you need it .
4 – except unchangeable situation or the thing that out of your hand.
in my opinion, i prefer to do some exercise if i fell stress, but in our life , stress is everywhere, we cannot avoid it. we should accept it and try to adapt it. we can not change the evironment we live, but we can change ourselves .....
ReplyDeleteEvery action has reaction , and when we act emotionally to any situation our body respond for that's . Also , stress surrounding us every day and every where , therefore we need to know how to deal with it . I think the lecture forget to mention the most important advice and that's is to be patient and calm because being calm helps us to recognize the stress signals and pay attention to the body demand and being patient will easily making us accepting the situation and pesices the activity.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, I didn't often overstress. But make a plan then do it step by step is a good way to deal the stress of study which is the most important thing for me now. Fortunately, It is easy for me to forget the preblems I have. But unfortunately, I usually forget the vocabulary I have to know.Do you know sometimes I spend an hour to memory vocabulary, then after 10 minutes I forget them clear and complete.Embarrassing!
ReplyDeleteIn our daily life, we usually have to live with stress which comes from our general events such as getting married or taking tests and stress can be both positive and negative. There are a lot of advice suggested by psychologist to cope with stress: learn to recognize all stress signals before getting out of control; pay attention to your body's demands; make plan and act; learn to accept situation that are unchangable or out of your hand. I found that all of these advice are useful for my life, but the most relevant idea is the first one: learn to recognize early signs of stress. The sooner I recognize these signs, the better I do to prevent them from getting out of my hand. When I realized that I could not sleep day by day or I lost weight rapidly without any diet plans, I certainly knew that I was in stress situation and I had to consider ways to protect myself.
ReplyDeleteThis listening material is easier than NPR news. Speaker talks slowly, less unfamiliar complicated words. Sometimes, I just want to say " What the hell are they talking about?" while listening to NPR news.
ReplyDeleteThe first point professor said is to recognize individual's signal of stress, for example, smoking, increasing blood pressure. If individual can be aware of those early stress signals, then he or she can consider ways to prevent them from hurting his or her body.
The second way to deal with stress properly is to pay attention to body demands. Exercises can keep your body busy and be occupied with non-stressful environment.
The third thing to be done to reduce stress is to make plan and act. The process of planing and acting can weaken the feeling of stress.
Forth, learn to accept situations which you can not act on.
Last, pace activities. Choosing a speed that is appropriate to you make things better and less stressful. Agreed.
To me, the last one is the most realistic.
like the lecture say live without stress is impossible. The first is not very important. There is lots of information about the defination of stress.Of course, nobody want have stress. However, it cannot be forbidden.so,if we can aviod them,we need to accept it.The most important thing is how to relax the stress. In the second part, the lecture taught us about 5or 6 different types of reactaion.I learn much information in this lecture.
ReplyDeleteThere are two part stress.one is positive another one is negative.
ReplyDeleteFor negative part stress, The professor has a couple of tips to deal with the stress. First, recognize individual's signal of stress.
Second, pay attention to your body demand.Thirdly, make a plan for yourself and act when you need it. Finally, learn to accept situations which you can not act on. All these solution are useful and help us to overcome the stress
The instructor provides five ways to get ride or to decline the stress, the first one is to recognize the signle of stress to prevent it but stil the most important the action which kind of action that we are going to do, the second one doing exrcise it does not work with me, because whenever I finsh the exrcise I will back to my stress, the fifth one it seems good idea however broken one task into small tasks and giving our self a probar time, some times is not the person choose to do the taske in specific time, some times the manger give the employees anrational deidtime, I will go with the third one and the forth one making a plane and act is good rather than just thinking of the stress I will be busy in the act. Also, learning to accept the situation is good because if we can not do any thing to our stress, it would not to change any thing but may be will excerbate the situation.
ReplyDeleteStress is something that will have to live with, the solution to the problem is learn how to cope with stress. We have to be careful with our bodies symptoms because they can show if we are stress out to a critical point. Being aware of your causes of stress is the most important step that we have to do, because it will allow us to find the best solution for our stress symptom. Finally we have to learn how to be relax when we have problems.
ReplyDeleteI think that the lecture is interesting, and the piece of advice that I found useful for my life o I like was to learn or recognize our stress signal (the response of our body in front a stress situation) then focus on these and doing something to prevent these. I like this part because sometimes we do not pay attention to our body demands until get sick, so to know our body reactions can be helpfull to be healthy.
ReplyDeleteFor me ,i think the best way to avoid stress is to learn your own stress signals .so you can find ways to deal with stress. And I think it's a good way for me ,because I will know when am stress and I can do something about before it becomes a bigger problem.
