Please take notes on the article for the test. You can bring one page (BOTH SIDES) of notes to the test. You may not bring the entire article.

Vocabulary test is postponed until next week

No vocabulary test for Holes 8-20 tomorrow.  Because you have so many other tests going on, I decided to postpone this one until next week.

However, I want you to do exercises 1 and 2 and MT 1 in the chapters on inference and implied main idea for Friday.

Tomorrow in class we will listen to the lecture in chapter 5 and discuss "Internet's Gender Gap Narrows." This article was assigned at the beginning of the week.

Vocabulary Practice

Some of you did terribly on the vocabulary test today.  I think you know who you are.

Here's an offer. You can write 10 good sentences with those words and improve your score by 10 points.

Post your sentences here.

Blog Writing #6: Responding to the lecture on CVD (due Thursday)

Answer 3 of the following 4 questions:

1. Is there a high incidence of CVD in your country? If yes, which risk factors do you think are responsible? If not, why not, in your opinion?

2. Do you know anyone who fits the Type A description? Describe that person and how s/he is "Type A."

3. Do you personally know anyone who has cardiovascular problems? If so, what are that person's risk factors?

4. What about you? Are there any changes that you could make in your lifestyle that would decrease your own risk of CVD?

Have a great weekend

Hi Guys,

I can't believe we're at the end of week five. That means next week is midterm. The time has flown really fast. Wow.

For Monday in the Call Lab:
1.  In RS, read the section "skill focus" on supporting details and do the exercises. Then read and MAKE AN OUTLINE of the article "10 Things You can Do for Global Warming." If you have the old edition of RS, check your email for the pdf of the article. Bring your outline to class on Monday. You will be able to use it to answer the questions on the reading quiz.

If you have time, you can go to townsendpress.net and do the exercises in chapter 3 (supporting details). I think this is very helpful not only with supporting details but also with main idea. We will probably look at a few of these exercises in class on Monday.

2.  In ALE, do the matching exercises and study the words to be prepared for lecture 2 (in chapter 2). We will watch the lecture on Monday and take notes, and then you'll answer the questions on Tuesday.

3.  Also on Monday (but possibly on Tuesday), I will give you a lecture on plagiarism. You will take notes and answer some questions the following day (or on the blog).

4.  There is some blog writing and listening work that is due TONIGHT. Blog writing #4 and #5 and listening work #7.

Then, looking ahead...

We will have a vocabulary test on Tuesday. That's from the list "RSchapter2." This list includes the words you will need for the lecture on Monday.

We will have another vocabulary test on Friday. That will be Holes 8-20. So if you haven't started yet, its time to GET WITH IT (the program) because you're WAY BEHIND!

I know it seems like a lot of vocabulary, but its vocabulary that you've met in the reading so now you're just reviewing it. Keep going... you're doing a great job.

There will also be a reading midterm next week (Thursday or Friday) as well as a listening midterm. I will update you on these as soon as I have information.

Here's some good news:  Spring break is just a few weeks away!

Blog Writing #5: Smoking Interviews (due Friday)

Please answer the following question as fully as possible.

In the interviews we heard in class today, Pat told us that his parents knew that he smoked, but Donna kept her smoking a secret from her parents as long as she could. Can you think of any reasons for this difference? In your culture, is it more acceptable for men to smoke than it is for women? Explain.

Makeup Reading Test (for Igor, Rita, and Kexin)

If you missed the test, I will give you another reading test on Monday at 12:30 in the Call Lab.

A math problem to solve

A bicyclist accelerates at .89 meter/ second squared during a 5 second interval. What is the change in the speed of the bicyclist?

Listening Practice # 7 :Good news about bad habits (due Friday)

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/katies-take-abc-news/bad-habits-good-150053696.html

Watch the video and post a comment if you find anything interesting. If you have nothing to say, just write "done."

Blog Writing #4: Critical thinking on obesity (due Friday)

We've spent the past few weeks reading about and listening to the causes of obesity in children.

Some of the culprits are:

1. Genetics ("Fat Chance")
2. The fast food industry, with McDonald's at the forefront ("Supersize Me")
3. The beverage industry ("Bottlers Agree to a School Ban on Sweet Drinks")
4. The advertising agency ("Ban on Fast-Food TV Ads May Cut Obesity")
5. The schools, for not educating the children about nutrition and for not providing physical exercise time and equipment ("Supersize Me")
6. The parents
7. The children

Having considered all of the information, who do you think is responsible for our children's obesity epidemic? Use evidence from the above sources--and others, if you have them--to explain, support, and argue your point of view.

You can start your composition as follows:

Although its difficult to single out just one specific cause for the obesity epidemic in America, I believe that the major cause of the problem is ___________.

A composition is not an essay. You can write 1-2 long paragraphs to answer the question.

Answers to "Over the Limit?"

1. C
2. B
3. D
4. B
5. A
6. C
7. B
8. B
9. C
10. B

Over the Limit: Some questions to answer (in the Call Lab)

1.  Did you read the article and answer the questions? Answer YES or NO.
Your answer should have been YES. If your answer was no, then you did not do the homework, which was assigned ONE WEEK AGO.

Guys, you can't run the race if you don't do the training. This class is your chance to do the training. I am your coach and your guide. But I can't help you if you don't help yourself.

The way you improve your reading is by reading. Every article you read builds your reading and vocabulary muscles. Every reading you skip makes your muscles weak.

2.  What is the topic of the entire article?

The topic of this article is the effects of caffeine.

3.  What is the main idea of paragraph #4? The answer is STATED in the paragraph.

The main idea stated in paragraph 4 is "We may be pushing the limits of self-medication." All of the information which follows that sentence are details which support that thesis.

4.  In YOUR OWN WORDS, what is the main idea of paragraph #10?

There are some benefits of caffeine for adults who use it in moderation.

5.  What is the topic of paragraphs 11 and 12 (its the same topic)?

The disease-fighting benefits of caffeine.

6.  What is the IMPLIED main idea of the entire article?

Although caffeine has some benefits and is not all bad, it is basically being abused like a drug by Americans in general, and by kids and teens in particular.

Note: The beginning and the end of the article are all about the negative aspects of caffeine. The positive aspects are couched in a few paragraphs in the middle. If the author wanted to treat the topic equally--meaning, if he just wanted to say that there are both positives and negatives to caffeine--he would have given equal treatment to both sides. However, in this article the majority of the information is about the RISK and DAMAGING EFFECTS of caffeine. Even after all of the positive aspects of caffeine are listed, the author begins paragraph 13 saying, "Alas, that glorious rush of energy isn't entirely benign," and then goes on to list more negative effects of caffeine.

The Grammar Love Song

Two of my favorite topics in one song!

Some Valentines Day fun for you

1. Here is the final scene from the movie "When Harry Met Sally."

2. Below please find some definitions of love written by children. I hope they make you smile:

Some definitions of LOVE...

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love."
~Rebecca- age 8

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth."
~ Billy - age 4

"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs."
~ Chrissy - age 6

"Love is what's in the room with you on Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen." ~ Bobby - age 7

"Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday." ~ Noelle - age 7

"I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones." ~ Lauren - age 4

"You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget." ~ Jessica - age 8

And just for fun, how about writing your own definition of love as a comment to this post?

Our class photo

Tomorrow...

I'm really looking forward to our Fun Day tomorrow. I can't wait to see your talent. Please limit your performance/poem/act to about 10 minutes, if possible, so that we'll have enough time for everybody. I can bring a laptop and projector if anyone needs it. If you want me to make copies of something, bring it in the morning or email it to me. I hope you're having a very happy Valentines Day filled with LOVE (and CHOCOLATE) :D

Listening Practice #6: It's not WHAT you eat, it's WHEN you eat (due Friday)

Agree or disagree? Please post your thoughts.

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Don't exercise! It's all in the genes!

1.  A whale swims all day, only eats fish, drinks water, but is still fat
2.  A rabbit runs and hops and only lives 15 years, but
a tortoise doesn't run and does mostly nothing, yet it lives for 150 years.

For tomorrow

1. Please read and answer the questions to "Ban on School Drinks." You'll recognize some of the ideas from Supersize Me.

2.  Please be prepared to discuss the responses you received to your interview questions. Tell us who you interviewed, what was interesting about the responses, and what was surprising about the responses. Speak for 5-7 minutes and answer questions for 2-3 minutes after that. You will present in groups of 4 or 5. I would like to record your presentations (just audio, not video).

3.  Bring your notes from Supersize Me to answer questions.

Happy Weekend Everybody!

I hope everyone enjoys this beautiful weather and does something fun this weekend. Don't forget about Mardi Gras in Galveston, which will be something special. Don't worry about me. I'll be home preparing my house for the arrival of my grandchildren.

Looking ahead to next week:
Monday:  In 100B (LCC bldg), we'll continue with main idea (complete the exercises in the book on stated main idea). Also, we'll watch 1/2 of "Supersize Me," a documentary about the effects of a fast-food diet.

Tuesday:  In the Call Lab, we'll watch the rest of "Supersize Me." Of course we're not just going to passively watch the show. We'll take notes and answer questions based on the notes.

Wednesday:  You're going to present the results of your survey, so please get ahead on this and start interviewing people for your health survey (the survey is in the reading book--I will make copies of it on Monday for you).

Thursday:  We'll do something fun with Holes. Please read through chapter 12 (did I say 12 in class today?).

Friday:  Valentines Fun Day. Please meet with your teammates so you can prepare something special. Everyone has to participate.

Of course, if you want to train for the Reading Olympics (a.k.a. the American university), it means you have to do lots of reading and regularly increase your vocabulary, so let's aim for a MINIMUM of 10 words a day

To get you in the Valentines Day spirit, here is my gift to you:

Our next Friday Fun Day: Valentine's Day Edition

Hi Guys,

Next week we're going to have a special Fun Day activity for the last two hours to celebrate Valentine's Day. The theme of the Fun Day will be love.

Here's what I'd like you to do. I want you to get together with your classmates from 5A and 5B who are from your country or speak your language (Team China, Team KSA, Team Vietnam, Team South America, Team Africa, etc.) I want you to make a presentation about love to perform in front of your classmates (let's call it "LCC's Got Talent," or "International Idol.")

Your performance can be a skit (acting), a song, a poem, a love story, or a love game. The main thing is that everyone participates and you teach us something from your culture. You can sing it or perform it in your language, but then you'll have to translate it for us. I welcome your creativity!

Monny, you are the only person who doesn't have a partner :(    You can either do something by yourself or get yourself adopted by another group.

We can talk about this some more in class, but I just wanted to give you the "heads up" to start thinking about it.

Attention Excuse Note Authors!

Some of you have not yet written your excuse notes. I think you'll have to write an excuse note for that as well. You can write that one as a comment to this post. You still have to write the first one as a comment to the other post!

Some of you have tried to write excuse notes, but they were not sufficient. Please read my comments to see whether you need to try again. My goal is for you to become artists in the art of excuse notes.

Fun this weekend

I want to make sure that everyone knows about something exciting happening in Galveston this weekend. It's called "Mardi Gras." It is a famous celebration with carnivals, parades, and other interesting things to do and see. You guys should definitely go and check it out!

Dear Suliman, Essa, Ahmed, Dennis, Rita, Jinda, Jennifer, Francisco, Xiao, Moath, Merry, Hamzah, and Zhao:

Congratulations! You have succeeded to do none or nearly none of the blog work that has been assigned to date. I have no idea whether or not you have been keeping up with the reading homework (I can only guess at this point).

In the spirit of "Teacher Man," please write me your best excuse note as to why you haven't done your blog work.

I look forward to putting your notes in the right pile.

Blog Writing #3: Teacher Man (due Tuesday)

After reading the article (and listening to my audio, if you wish), answer the following question as fully as you can.

Homework and Have a Great Weekend!

Hi Guys,

What a great week we had. I hope you enjoyed our first Friday Fun Day as much as I did. Believe it or not, we did not do half of the activities I had planned. That's okay. We'll save it for our next Friday Fun Day in two weeks (Valentines Day Edition).

Here's the homework that I'd like you to do for Monday:

1.  Finish up all unfinished blog work. Some of you haven't done any of the blog work. Here's your chance to catch up.

2.  Listen to my audio while you're reading the article "Teacher Man." Then answer all of the questions in the book. Then answer my question on the blog.

Here's the link to my audio:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vanaoa-oBX0

3.  On Monday, we'll listen to the lecture entitled "Stress and the Immune System." Review the vocabulary related to the lecture in ALE. You'll take notes and then I'll give you some questions to answer.

4.  There's going to be a vocabulary test early next week, maybe Tuesday. That's on the first 60 words of the list I gave you. Hopefully, you've taken my advice and have been learning 10 words a day. All of the words on the list are from the readings in our reading book. If you scroll down the blog, you will also find vocabulary slides to help you review the words.

5.  Please buy the book "Holes," by Louis Sachar. I'd like to start reading it this week.

So that's listening, reading, vocabulary... I guess that's it...

Hope you have a great weekend and a fun Superbowl Sunday...

and also, on behalf of everyone in the class, let me wish  a very happy 21st birthday
to VICKY and IBRAHIM!
(Now you're old enough for MARGARITA and HANGOVER ;)
