Over the Limit: Some questions to answer (in the Call Lab)
1. Did you read the article and answer the questions? Answer YES or NO.
Your answer should have been YES. If your answer was no, then you did not do the homework, which was assigned ONE WEEK AGO.
Guys, you can't run the race if you don't do the training. This class is your chance to do the training. I am your coach and your guide. But I can't help you if you don't help yourself.
The way you improve your reading is by reading. Every article you read builds your reading and vocabulary muscles. Every reading you skip makes your muscles weak.
2. What is the topic of the entire article?
The topic of this article is the effects of caffeine.
3. What is the main idea of paragraph #4? The answer is STATED in the paragraph.
The main idea stated in paragraph 4 is "We may be pushing the limits of self-medication." All of the information which follows that sentence are details which support that thesis.
4. In YOUR OWN WORDS, what is the main idea of paragraph #10?
There are some benefits of caffeine for adults who use it in moderation.
5. What is the topic of paragraphs 11 and 12 (its the same topic)?
The disease-fighting benefits of caffeine.
6. What is the IMPLIED main idea of the entire article?
Although caffeine has some benefits and is not all bad, it is basically being abused like a drug by Americans in general, and by kids and teens in particular.
Note: The beginning and the end of the article are all about the negative aspects of caffeine. The positive aspects are couched in a few paragraphs in the middle. If the author wanted to treat the topic equally--meaning, if he just wanted to say that there are both positives and negatives to caffeine--he would have given equal treatment to both sides. However, in this article the majority of the information is about the RISK and DAMAGING EFFECTS of caffeine. Even after all of the positive aspects of caffeine are listed, the author begins paragraph 13 saying, "Alas, that glorious rush of energy isn't entirely benign," and then goes on to list more negative effects of caffeine.
